ABSTRACT:
Since the dawn of time, the mask has been used by the human being as a symbol of the "other than himself" and at the same time as a symbol of his deepest being, beyond the contingency of everyday life. From the sacred initiation ceremonies to medieval carnival masquerades, from the disturbing literature of ETA Hoffmann to the cinema of Lynch and Polanski, the mask still rises today in the image of the double ("doppelgänger"), the dark side from which man continually tries to keep distances and at the same time, almost unconsciously, to get closer.
