ABSTRACT:
The dimension of the fantastic has always existed. In ancient times, through the use of myths, sagas, legends and cosmogonies, human beings shaped their beliefs and motivated their actions. Today the fantastic continues to permeate life and the collective unconscious of man, expressing itself with certainly different means but always capable of magnetizing our inner compasses. Lovecraft, Machen, Meyrink, Smith and Tolkien are five paradigmatic authors of this genre, presented here in all their literary and philosophical dignity. HP LOVECRAFT he was in all probability the most influential writer of fantastic literature of the twentieth century, for his ability to imbue his literature with the horror of a cosmic inspiration. In the famous tales of the "Cthulhu Cycle" the anthropocentrism on which the modern world is founded is annihilated by the realization that, in the abyss of time, unspeakable and alien entities, the "Great Ancients", preceded us on our planet , and that their near future return from cosmic space will mark the beginning of a "new dark age" for humanity.
