ABSTRACT:

Published in France in 1970, "From Zalmoxis to Genghis-Khan" collects a series of essays written by Eliade over three decades, dedicated to the study of pre- and post-Christian myths and religious traditions of Central-Eastern Europe . Starting from the Geto-Dacians and focusing on the cult of the god Zalmoxis, the author extends his research, in a comparative perspective, to the themes of religious dualism and to the most famous Romanian popular legends and narratives, such as the Legend of Mastro Manole and The sheep seer. He also explores the cosmogonic myths present in Eastern European folk traditions, the founding myths, the rites of building, the popular traditions on the collection and use of mandrake and other medicinal herbs, without forgetting magical and shamanic practices. Built on solid documentation but accessible and engaging, this volume represents a unicum in Eliad's scientific production, as well as a point of reference for research on the religious traditions of Central and Eastern Europe. The new Italian edition, revised and corrected, also includes an unpublished brief by Eliade as an appendix.
